An unfinished book containing information about creatures found in the Dreamlands.
Description[]
The book appears to be from the ninth or tenth century.[1] The front cover of the book has three symbols:
- the symbol of Shub-Niggurath (the same symbol on the book John was bound to prior to Part One)[2]
- a symbol used in the summoning of Scratch - circular with a pattern that repeats into its center[3]
- a faded symbol, currently unknown
There are three different, unique symbols on the back cover of currently unknown origin.[4]
The book is divided into chapters dedicated to the descriptions, habitats, and behaviors of various creatures found in the Dreamlands. The book is handwritten, and many of the entries are incomplete.[4] The creatures are divided between more physical manifestations and non-physical entities.[1]
History[]
In 1934, Arthur finds the bestiary in a library in the tunnels beneath The Island, presumably used by Amanda Cummings. It's found next to a book related to The King in Yellow. John and Arthur take both books with them.[2]
In the Dreamlands, John and Arthur consult the bestiary in an attempt to help defeat a creature in the chasm beneath the Desert. While the bestiary has an entry about the creature, its unfinished, vague entries prove ultimately unhelpful.[4]
In December 1934, Oscar reads the bestiary in an attempt to identify the entity Scratch. While researching, he finds an entry about Forgotten Ones, fractured manifestations or counterparts of Great Ones trapped from outside.[1]
